Type of Workzone Traffic Management Risk Assessment *
Before commencing any work at a worksite near a roadway a risk assessment must be conducted to determine if Workzone Traffic Management (WZTM) is required. Where it is, all hazards that might put staff or members of the public at risk of injury must be identified and adequate measures must be put in place to control the hazards.
Considerations prior to the WZTM set up:
- Can work be programmed for school holidays?
- Can work be programmed when the traffic flow is reduced e.g. after 9am and before 3pm?
- Can work be programmed for weekends?
What is the distance between workers from road way?
Hazardous work area – when clearance to traffic is less than 1.2m and not protected by a road safety barrier system (Category 2) – Complete risk the risk assessment and implement traffic management including all the controls identified in the risk assessment.
Work area clearance to traffic between 1.2 m & 3M (Category 1) - Complete risk the risk assessment and implement traffic management including all the controls identified in the risk assessment.
Work area 3m to 6m clear of traffic – Workzone traffic management may not be required but ensure that a safe distance between the work area and passer-by.  Modify the controls if circumstances change.
Note: The risk assessment must be carried out by a person with current Workzone Traffic Management certification.
Risk assessment process:
1. Identify the hazards for the worksite and rate the risk.
2. Implement control measures and rate the risk.
3. Implement identified control measures.
4. WZTM Risk Assessments will be recorded in CM Container B5936
Note: If you cannot implement identified control measures do not commence work and contact your workgroup leader/Team Leader/Coordinator. All traffic management schemes must be set up in accordance to Australian Standard 1742.3 and utilizing DPTI Field Guide Version 9, 2020.
An end of day risk assessment must be conducted when a worksite is left unattended overnight and signage is still in place.
Note: The unattended worksite shall be set up for the road user and not for the road worker. Ensure at the end of the day you select “Finish” and document the changes to signage that have been made to demonstrate this.
A plan for a traffic management configuration that best suits the road and conditions may be available from the standard traffic management figures provided in the DPTI Field Guide Version 9, 2020.
